The crystal skulls are human skull models made from clear or milky quartz crystal, often claimed to exhibit paranormal phenomena. These skulls have found their way into works of fiction - video games, books and even the fourth Indiana Jones film. Many of the skulls were thought to be pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts, but now most believe they were made more recently in the 19th century or later in Europe. Be sure to check out CrystalSkulls.com. Believe it or not... it is entertaining. The most famous crystal skull is the Mitchell-Hedges Skull, supposedly discovered in 1924 by Anna Le Guillon Mitchell-Hedges. The artifact is sometimes called "The Skull of Doom" due to instances of bad luck by handlers, and because of alleged unexplained properties. Two views of the Mitchell-Hedges Skull Although no evidence of any unusual phenomena associated with the skulls has been found, these mysterious pieces have been tied to several wild theories that seem tailor made for a science fiction flick. Perhaps the most spectacular theory involving crystal skulls surfaced on a recent Sci Fi Channel special ( Mystery of the Crystal Skulls) as an attempt was made to link the skulls, Martians and the Maya. The Mayan calendar ends on December 12, 2012 and the show detailed a scenario where thirteen mystical skulls would be gathered together to prevent an Armageddon type catastrophe implied by the completion of the Mayan cycle.

The British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution found they were victims of skull-duggery... (great pun!) as scientists say they have been able to prove crystal skulls in their possesion are fakes. Fake Skull StorySmithsonian Skull
