Often we see something strange out of the corner of our eyes, or hear
some strange noise that gives us the creeps. We even see odd lights or shapes that just make no sense. Most of the time when we encounter such things we are alone. There was no one there to justify what we saw. The lack of reassurance can and does often lead us to doubt the experience, especially over time. It is the rare occasion when there are two or more people who witness such unexplainable events - on these occasions you have a collaborator, you have proof.
That leads me to the story of how I finally caught our ghostly prankster red-handed.
My family house sits at the foot of an ancient Appalachian mountain that was home to a tribe of Cherokee. Hiking in the area you can still find arrowheads and odd piles of rock that surely are burial spots. In other words it can be pretty creepy. Growing up I lost track of how many items disappeared then reappeared under strange circumstances. Lots of times my sister and I would be accused of taking something that belonged to our parents that we knew nothing about. There were plenty other cases of me looking for something for hours only to find it right where I thought it was in the first place.
After many years of this going on, I began to wonder if we had a ghost, spirit whatever. But I had no hard evidence. There was always room for doubt. Until one strange day off from college...
My friend John was spending the day at the house playing video games and watching movies with me. There was a movie I had promised to lend him and I had placed it under the big yellow chair in my room. (that was my spot to put things I needed to remember). John's mom was picking him up around 5 o'clock, so about 4:30 or so he gathered his stuff together to leave. I reached under my chair for the tape and there was nothing. I was absolutely sure that I had placed it there so I asked John if he'd already got it. He hadn't.
We began a great search that included picking my lounge chair (heavy sucker) up and looking through the bottom of it. I kept my room very neat and there was nothing on the floor for it to be under. We then started to look all through the house with no success. It its very important at this part of the story that I state that at no time was John or myself out of each other's sight. There was absolutely no chance of trickery by either of us.
Then as John's mom pulled up into my yard to wait for him, we decided that he was not meant to watch the movie. We headed back into my room to pick up his bag. We saw the missing tape at exactly the same time. It was lying just out from under my chair... just where it should have been the whole time. We didn't say a word to each other for what seemed like an eternity. Then John let out a shaky "That was NOT there before."
"Nope," I replied as I handed him the movie. No one was with us, and neither of us could have placed the tape there. It happened years ago but we still talk about if from time to time, because it is proof enough for us that something is different about my old house...
