Okay, I'm not a Tennessee Titans fan, and as I said in another post, I didn't get to watch any of the games Sunday. So I don't know first-hand Vince Young's struggles. I know we've all heard that he didn't live up to the hype last year, and apparently he threw a couple of interceptions this week. But his team still won. So why were the Titans fans booing their QB?
Who knows. This is one of those things that has always baffled me. I have a loyal streak a mile wide. It takes me a long time to give up on anything. For example, last year (and lots of other seasons) when Jake Delhomme was taking a verbal beating, I stood by his side. That's my boy. And while he isn't the greatest QB, I feel he's the best to lead the Panthers. There's something there between him and the rest of the team, and during the QB shuffle that ensued after he was injured, I feel my point was made. But I was faithful the whole time, never doubting he'd be back and better this season.
What I'm getting at is that it seriously irks me when a crowd boos its own team. That's just bad sportsmanship. It's childish and a tad ridiculous. I've heard the arguement that the players make so much money that it doesn't matter. But honestly, the best players, the ones that make that much money, they're that good because they DO care. And getting booed by their home crowd gets to them. It's different when it's the opposing crowd - that gets a player fired up. But when you're playing for a crowd that doesn't support you, it hurts. You feel it. You hear every boo.
And that leads me back to Vince Young. A young man who should be in his prime, learning his way around the league, with the support of his team and his fans. Instead he gets booed when he's on the field by the people who should be his biggest form of support. Can you blame the guy for going into hiding? He got booed during a game that they won. And now he's talking about retiring - during his second season. So now tell me that these guys don't feel it. Do I think he's being whiny? No. I think he's being honest. I think he's looking around at what he puts into the game vs. what he's getting out of it. And I think that he sees an unfair balance. If he's not happy, why should he keep playing for an ungrateful public? I don't blame him at all.
Anyway, sorry that it got long here. But this is really one of my biggest pet peeves. Professional athletes play for money, it's true. But a lot of them play for the love of the game, they play for the fans that show up every week. And who are we to take that away from them for a few bad plays? (Please understand I'm not talking Michael Vick here - I thought it was excellent when he was booed, but that was for a WHOLE different, totally deserving reason.) Read the article and let me know what you think.
